Wenea reaffirms its commitment to the United Kingdom with a plan to deploy over 500 chargers across the British territory

  • The Spanish electric vehicle service company will expand its charging network in the United Kingdom, with plans to deploy over 500 chargers throughout the country.
  • Wenea is part of Europe’s most powerful electric vehicle charging superhub, which has a capacity of 10 MW and can simultaneously charge up to 400 EVs.
  • With this development plan, Wenea positions itself as a leading company in electric vehicle charging in the southwest region of England.

Energy Superhub Oxford

The opening of this charging center, located at Redbridge Park & Ride, Oxford, is a significant step forward in the company’s development plan in the country. The initiative, led by British energy company Pivot Power, also includes other major players in the electric mobility sector such as Fastned and Tesla and can charge up to 400 vehicles simultaneously, thanks to its 10 MW power capacity.

This project, in which Wenea has contributed 20 charging points with capacities of up to 22 kW, is part of Oxford’s emissions reduction plans, aiming for zero emissions by 2040.

According to Jose Contreras, Wenea’s UK director, “This project is a perfect example of collaboration between public and private transportation, as it offers different types of charging services to meet the needs of all electric vehicle drivers. We are very proud to participate in this initiative, providing the Park & Ride with a service that allows visitors to explore Oxford using public transport while their EVs can charge.”

Expansion plan and new projects

The company, which launched its first EV project in 2018 after winning the Innovate UK innovation award for urban fast charging networks, and is part of the Diggia Group, which has been operating in the UK since 2013, has worked on various sustainable innovation projects with public entities such as the National Health Service (NHS) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It has also won several public tenders for the deployment of public charging infrastructure, establishing itself as a leader in electric charging in the southwest of England and a reliable partner for public entities.

Wenea already has operational charging stations in Scotland, in the locations of Carrutherstown and Peebles, and plans to deploy in the English counties of Devon and Herefordshire, with a presence in cities such as Plymouth and Exeter.

Under the Innovate UK project, Wenea is deploying 100 chargers in the city of Exeter, and an additional 100 chargers will be deployed across the rest of Devon between 2022 and 2024. With power capacities ranging from 50 to 150 kW, the first chargers are expected to be operational during the third quarter of 2022. The Plymouth and Herefordshire projects will have 150 and 64 chargers respectively, with power capacities ranging from 50 kW to 150 kW.

With this ambitious development plan, the company, which is already a major player in electric mobility in Spain, positions itself in the United Kingdom as a leader in fast charging and a partner to key public institutions.

In addition to public charging services for EVs, Wenea also offers private charging services and charging management for private entities such as businesses, hotels, or vehicle fleets through its own digital platform.

As Alberto Cantero, CEO of Wenea, expresses, “We are delighted to extend our comprehensive operational model beyond the borders of Spain and, in particular, to do so in the United Kingdom, where we have market knowledge, consolidated experience, and the best team to tackle new challenges. EV penetration in the UK is higher than in Spain, with almost 16.1% of the vehicle fleet, and it is projected that there will be 36 million EVs on the roads by 2040. Our presence in this market allows us to analyze and improve our services and stay ahead of the needs of the Spanish market.”
