● The new fast and ultra-fast electric vehicle charging points in the capital will accelerate sustainable mobility in neighbourhoods such as Salamanca and Chamartín, among many others
Madrid, 24 Sept 2024 – Wenea, Spain’s leading electric vehicle charging operator, has been awarded the tender promoted by the Madrid City Council for the construction and operation of charging stations in the city. This project aims to boost the transition to electric mobility in the capital by providing key infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging in strategic areas.
The contract, under the public concession model for exclusive use of public roads, will allow Wenea to deploy and operate fast and ultra-fast charging stations starting in November 2024. The concession has an initial duration of 10 years, with the option to extend it for an additional 4 years, solidifying the company’s long-term commitment to sustainable mobility in Madrid.
Wenea will deploy a total of 12 new charging stations and upgrade 8 existing ones, all featuring fast and ultra-fast charging capabilities. Each station will have 2 to 3 charging points offering power outputs between 50 kW and 150 kW, supporting both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) charging. This advanced technology will significantly reduce waiting times for EV drivers. The stations will be strategically distributed across several Madrid districts, including Arganzuela, Chamartín, Chamberí, Retiro, and Salamanca, ensuring easy access to fast charging for both residents and visitors.
With this contract, Wenea continues to expand its charging network in the capital, where it already operates over 50 stations in locations such as hotels, shopping malls, cinemas, and public spaces. This project aligns with Madrid City Council’s initiatives to promote the use of electric vehicles and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The new infrastructure will provide EV drivers with faster and more efficient charging options, supporting the city’s transition to cleaner transportation.
Alberto Cantero, CEO of Wenea, stated: “We are very proud to have been awarded this tender, which undoubtedly contributes to the future of sustainable mobility in Madrid. Our goal is to provide access to a fast and efficient charging infrastructure, allowing electric vehicle drivers to move around the city without limitations. These projects are essential in our cities, bringing individuals and businesses closer to the value chain of a cleaner and more sustainable mobility model.”
